Make Cyber Dignity Go Viral 2019: Teaching Pro Bono Digital Age Law for Teens and Young Adults

Please join ChIPs Silicon Valley for a post-presentation reception November 11, 2019 at 1 pm (including lunch and a networking reception featuring an Autumn Spritz Bar, a seasonal take on the Aperol spritz) at the San Francisco offices of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, 555 Mission Street, #3000 following an important Practising Law Institute (PLI) CLE program on teaching young people about their rights and obligations in the digital realm. Gibson Dunn Partner and Silicon Valley ChIPs board member Carrie LeRoy will co-present, along with Mahlet Getachew, General Counsel at Suki AI, an innovative CLE learning opportunity entitled “Make Cyber Dignity Go Viral 2019: Teaching Pro Bono Digital Age Law for Teens and Young Adults.” In the post-#metoo viral campaign era and with increasing advances in technology, social media platforms and applications, it is critical that young people learn of their rights and obligations at the intersection of their digital lives and intimacy.

Through the “Cyber Dignity” program, Carrie and Mahlet will train attorneys on 1) empowering teens and young adults to know and exercise their rights in relation to online misconduct, consent and related criminal conduct, 2) content directed at deterring unlawful online and related misconduct that far too often results in tragic outcomes, and 3) how best to engage teen and young adult bystanders to help their peers to navigate the pitfalls of technology misuse and to report misconduct. Gibson Dunn’s offices are a quick 5-minute walk ( .3 miles) from PLI’s offices in SF (@ 685 Market Street). Attorneys who have taught the Cyber Dignity program will attend the luncheon reception to share their perspectives on teaching and why this initiative is impactful and empowering to young people, and in particular girls, young women and LGBTQ youth, who tend to be disproportionately affected by the issues explored through the Cyber Dignity program.

Please note that this event falls on Veteran’s Day, which may make the traffic less congested coming into SF from SV. Also, ChIPs Silicon Valley is offering scholarships to attorneys who are members of ChIPs and require financial assistance to be able to attend the PLI program. There is no charge for attendance at the reception, and completion of the PLI program is not a requirement of attendance at the reception, although an interest in getting involved in the Cyber Dignity program is a requirement! Please email Carrie LeRoy re: requests for PLI financial assistance: cleroy@gibsondunn.com. Please RSVP to attend the luncheon reception by November 6, 2019.
