ChIPs Celebrates Three Historic Nominations

Congratulations to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson on her confirmation as the 116th Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court and the first Black woman to serve on the bench. We are thrilled to witness this historic confirmation and this step towards true representation in the highest court.

Watching the first Black women ever to be confirmed to the high court gives us a renewed sense of excitement and opportunity for all women to rise up to the highest levels of leadership.

In the same week, former ChIPs Advisory Board member, Winston & Strawn Partner, and Presidential Nominee Kathi Vidal was confirmed by the United States Senate as Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and as Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Kathi will lead the USPTO’s 13,000+ employees and its nearly $4 billion budget. She will also serve as the principal advisor to the President of the United States and the administration, through the Secretary of Commerce, on all intellectual property policy matters.

The Software Alliance announced that its President and CEO, Victoria Espinel, ChIPs Board Director, has been appointed to the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee (NAIAC). As outlined in the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020, the NAIAC will advise the President on enhancing US competitiveness and leadership in artificial intelligence (AI).

Mental Health and Wellness

One of the gifts of Covid was an increased focus on mental health and well-being. Topics that used to be off limits in the workplace are now mainstream across organizations. Still, we could get better at being mindful of our own mental health.  Association Now shares this 5-part Burnout Challenge that we thought you might like to try starting with “Practice Shutting Down.”

Will you take the challenge? If you do, let us know how it works for you. We would love to hear from you.

Send us an email at info@chipsnetwork.org or share your story on InstagramLinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter and tag ChIPs.

Another great resource on the topic of well-being is this article:

Message from Joan Toth, Executive Director – Self-care and Reinvention

April has arrived, bringing with it a sense of renewal and reinvention. The month started with the historic confirmations of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court and Kathi Vidal as Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO.

Here at ChIPs we are moving ahead quickly on an incredible line-up for the Global Summit that will be held in person for the first time since 2019. It feels like a huge turning point and a shift from how we have been working for the past two years.

As we learn how to reconnect and travel picks up, it might feel a bit overwhelming. We have become so good at pivoting and changing. I hope you will find time to connect to self-care. What if you could take five minutes and check-in with yourself? Pause, step away from work, and focus on your breath. Then come back feeling more engaged and connected to a positive mindset and the positive impact you can make.

Thank you for being part of this incredible ChIPs community with us! I look forward to seeing you in San Francisco this October 26-28.

Sincerely,
Joan Toth
