Session Summaries
Session 1: UPC Judges’ Panel
We now have over a year of UPC cases and experience. From preliminary injunctions, to claim interpretation, and from choice of language, to access to documents, this panel of UPC judges and practitioners will analyze the big cases, identify key trends and debate best practices in the new court. The panel will also discuss important strategic issues on managing UPC and parallel national litigation and the impact that the upcoming CJEU decision in BSH v Electrolux will have on European litigation.
Session 2: What’s coming next on the EU AI Act and on the global AI horizon
Legislating to control an expected $1.3 trillion market by 2032 is no small feat. But that is exactly what the European Union did with their EU AI Act. Approved by the European Council this past May, the comprehensive legislation will see parts of the Act coming into force earlier, including the ban of unacceptable risky AI systems and a code of practice. What does this all mean in practice? A panel of experts will explain what you need to know, what you need to do and what to look out for on the horizon as more jurisdictions start to legislate and develop AI policy.
Session 3: How to (successfully) work with US in-house counsel
Culture and communication impact how we do business every day. Being fluent in global customs and communication is crucial to business success. For European practitioners, this means working effectively with US clients. Led by US in-house counsel, Dorian Daley, former General Counsel of Oracle and ChIPs Board Director, Laurie Charrington, head of patent litigation, Netflix; Meg Cesare, associate general counsel, EMEA Litigation, Airbnb; and Linda Brugioni, BakerHughes and ChIPs Italy Chapter Lead, this panel will lift the lid on how to work and communicate effectively with US clients, developing US client fluency, minimizing the pitfalls and maximizing the peaks in building strong relationships, and how to manage difficult conversations.
Session 4: AI & Fashion – How AI ethical issues are impacting industry
Some fashion brands are publicly embracing generative AI, calling it a tool in the sewing kit. Other fashion designers are more cautious, looking at the experience of colleagues in film and TV during the recent strikes as a sign of what may occur in the fashion industry. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has recently partnered with an AI startup to help its members navigate AI, while also providing a forum to discuss its impact on IP, jobs and creativity. In the capital of fashion, this panel will explore the pressing issues of AI and ethics in creative industries and how companies can embrace new technological tools, while protecting human creativity that has fueled a centuries old industry.
