Legislation and Innovation – San Francisco
ChIPs hosted the second annual ChIPs Advocacy Leadership Innovation (ALI) Program on June 20-21 in San Francisco. Twenty three high school age girls attended a “mock-law” class at UC Hastings School of Law and then observed courtroom proceedings of Judge Susan Illston and Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim, of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The judges and an array of women courtroom professionals—prosecutor, public defender, probation officer, and marshalls—shared their expert individual perspectives on the civil system and on opportunities for women throughout the legal profession. Karen Johnson-McKewan, and the team at Orrick were wonderful hosts for the second day that included a presentation by Emily Hostage, Senior Director, Corporate Development and Policy Counsel at RPX Corporation, on intellectual property law followed by a panel of women attorneys that represented different practice areas and shared invaluable career advice.
